Wednesday, March 1

Seamus spent the morning scrambling to shore up the accounts Milch hadn’t stolen yet. Clients who dealt with his uncle for years weren’t returning his calls. He and Bernheim sat together, wary of telling Helga, but they both knew it was only a matter of time before she found out. They were halfway through the list of calls they needed to make when she burst into his office.

“I told you this was going to happen.”

“Take a seat, Helga.”

She did as Seamus asked. “What are you doing?”

“Trying to convince our customers not to leave us in the lurch when we need them most,” Bernheim said.

“And trying to hide how desperate we are,” Seamus added.

“And this is all because of your insistence that this place be a haven for traitors to the Reich—people who would subvert every belief we have.”

“People like Jews, Helga?” Bernheim asked.

“I didn’t mention you.”

“But what about Leonard Greenberg, Judith Starobin, Robert Greenfield? I could go on.”

“The new government isn’t friendly to their interests. I’m not saying we should throw them out on the street.”

“What are you saying, then?” the factory manager asked.

Seamus had never seen him lose his cool before. “Ok, this isn’t getting us anywhere. We need to band together.”

“Or sell. Why don’t we give Milch what he wants?” Helga asked.

“Because he’d get rid of our entire workforce,” Seamus said.

“And Seamus wouldn’t get a pfennig,” Bernheim said.

“We could come to an arrangement. I would make sure Seamus was compensated.”

“That wasn’t what your father wanted. He put strict guidelines in his will to prevent the sale of the factory.” Seamus held up the list of clients. “This is what’s important now. We need to retain the business we have. Will you help us?”

Helga took the list in her hand. “Yes.” She picked up the phone and called the first name on the sheet of paper. Two minutes later, she hung up.

“They’re staying with us.” She put a check on the piece of paper.

They pored over the accounts for another hour after the final phone call. The factory was in trouble. Milch had poached almost half of their accounts. The Cologne account was their last hope. If they lost it, they’d have no choice but to lay off much of the staff, or even close. Bernheim insisted on making that call himself. Seamus and Helga watched him until he hung up the phone.

“He didn’t say if Milch was in contact with them, but I think they’re going to stay with us.”

Seamus breathed a sigh of relief and slumped back in his chair.

Near the end of the workday, Seamus was resting on the railing outside his office, looking out over the factory floor. Salnikov waved up to him. His daughter was still in the clinic. The mysterious procedure to cure her brain tumor and even her mental condition was well underway.

He went back into his office. Martina Sammer, the secretary he, Helga, and Bernheim shared, knocked on his door.

“Herr Ritter?”

“What is it, Martina?”

“There’s a gentleman here to see you.
