Seamus spent the morning scrambling to shore up the accounts Milch hadnât stolen yet. Clients who dealt with his uncle for years werenât returning his calls. He and Bernheim sat together, wary of telling Helga, but they both knew it was only a matter of time before she found out. They were halfway through the list of calls they needed to make when she burst into his office.
âI told you this was going to happen.â
âTake a seat, Helga.â
She did as Seamus asked. âWhat are you doing?â
âTrying to convince our customers not to leave us in the lurch when we need them most,â Bernheim said.
âAnd trying to hide how desperate we are,â Seamus added.
âAnd this is all because of your insistence that this place be a haven for traitors to the Reichâpeople who would subvert every belief we have.â
âPeople like Jews, Helga?â Bernheim asked.
âI didnât mention you.â
âBut what about Leonard Greenberg, Judith Starobin, Robert Greenfield? I could go on.â
âThe new government isnât friendly to their interests. Iâm not saying we should throw them out on the street.â
âWhat are you saying, then?â the factory manager asked.
Seamus had never seen him lose his cool before. âOk, this isnât getting us anywhere. We need to band together.â
âOr sell. Why donât we give Milch what he wants?â Helga asked.
âBecause heâd get rid of our entire workforce,â Seamus said.
âAnd Seamus wouldnât get a pfennig,â Bernheim said.
âWe could come to an arrangement. I would make sure Seamus was compensated.â
âThat wasnât what your father wanted. He put strict guidelines in his will to prevent the sale of the factory.â Seamus held up the list of clients. âThis is whatâs important now. We need to retain the business we have. Will you help us?â
Helga took the list in her hand. âYes.â She picked up the phone and called the first name on the sheet of paper. Two minutes later, she hung up.
âTheyâre staying with us.â She put a check on the piece of paper.
They pored over the accounts for another hour after the final phone call. The factory was in trouble. Milch had poached almost half of their accounts. The Cologne account was their last hope. If they lost it, theyâd have no choice but to lay off much of the staff, or even close. Bernheim insisted on making that call himself. Seamus and Helga watched him until he hung up the phone.
âHe didnât say if Milch was in contact with them, but I think theyâre going to stay with us.â
Seamus breathed a sigh of relief and slumped back in his chair.
Near the end of the workday, Seamus was resting on the railing outside his office, looking out over the factory floor. Salnikov waved up to him. His daughter was still in the clinic. The mysterious procedure to cure her brain tumor and even her mental condition was well underway.
He went back into his office. Martina Sammer, the secretary he, Helga, and Bernheim shared, knocked on his door.
âHerr Ritter?â
âWhat is it, Martina?â
âThereâs a gentleman here to see you.
